Turmeric, one of the main spices in Indian curry dishes, comes from the curcuma plant which is found in India and other Southeast Asian countries.
There are many chemical compounds in turmeric known as curcuminoids – the active substance in curcumin. According to the Mayo Clinic, curcumin is what makes turmeric a “functional food” which means “foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.” – which is pretty cool!
